A small village on I-57
Calumet Park covers about 1.15 square miles and had 7,025 residents at the 2020 Census. It sits northwest of Riverdale and east of Blue Island, and Interstate 57 runs right through it, with exit 353 at 127th Street and Burr Oak Avenue and exit 354 at 119th Street. For us the trip is short and simple: out of our lot on Lowe Avenue, north on Halsted Street, west on 127th. About 2.6 road miles, six minutes without traffic.
127th Street has a second name here. In May 2010 the village board renamed it Obama Drive, so you may hear it called either. Both work when you tell us where the car is. The village was once named DeYoung. Village Hall, at 12409 South Throop Street, is another landmark drivers know.
Two ZIP codes cover Calumet Park, 60643 and 60827, which is why online maps sometimes label the same block as “Chicago” or “Riverdale”. We go by the street address.
Mostly houses, which means driveways
About two thirds of Calumet Park’s homes are single-family houses, by the Census Bureau’s 2020-2024 estimates, and around a quarter are in buildings of five or more units. So most pickups are from a driveway or the street in front of the house, with some from apartment lots.
A few village rules shape how that goes:
- Parkways are off limits. In residential districts, parking, standing or stopping on or over a parkway (the grass strip between sidewalk and curb) isn’t allowed except in an emergency or at police direction. Don’t push a dead car onto the grass to clear the driveway.
- Snow goes on your side. Throwing, blowing or shovelling snow into the street or onto the sidewalk is banned, and piles over 3 feet aren’t allowed within 20 feet of a corner. After a storm, dig out a path to the car on your own property; the truck needs to reach the front or back end.
- Alleys are village-maintained. Public Works keeps the streets and alleys. If your car is in a rear garage off an alley, tell us, and leave yard waste and toters clear of the alley on pickup day.
The village’s general parking and street-cleaning schedules are adopted by reference and aren’t printed in the online code, so we don’t quote them here. If you’ve seen posted signs on your block, follow those.
The 7-day inoperable rule
Calumet Park’s nuisance chapter is specific. A vehicle counts as inoperable when its engine, wheels or other parts have been removed, altered or damaged for at least 7 days so it can’t run under its own power; a temporary repair is excluded. An inoperable vehicle on public or private property in public view is a nuisance.
The process is written out too. Police mail the registered owner a notice, and if the car isn’t gone within 7 days of the notice date, the village removes it. The exceptions are a car kept inside a building, an operable historic vehicle over 25 years old, and wrecking businesses.
So if you have a notice in hand, you have a known deadline. We can often come the same day, and our guide to inoperable car notices in the south suburbs compares this rule with the ones in Riverdale, Blue Island and the rest of the area.
Cars that won’t roll out of the garage
If your car has been sitting in a garage, then before pickup day, check whether the wheels turn, whether the steering is locked and whether the car will go into neutral. We explain each of those in moving a car that won’t roll. None of them stops a pickup, but knowing in advance saves time at the curb.
We take non-running cars and wrecked cars the same way: a quote on the phone or by form, a free tow, and payment by cash, Zelle or Cash App at the car. If there’s no title, tell us what papers you have and we’ll confirm on the call whether Illinois rules let them work.
Landmarks in Calumet Park
The Ashland/Calumet Park Metra Electric station, on Ashland Avenue near 124th Street, is the easiest reference point on the west side of the village. On the east side, Halsted Street and 127th Street are enough.
Next to Calumet Park
Blue Island is directly west, and the village of Riverdale, where our lot is, is southeast. Merrionette Park is a short drive northwest up Kedzie. See every area on the towns page.
