Searching for a junkyard

“Junkyard Blue Island” is one of the most common searches in this corner of Cook County, and most people typing it just want a dead car gone. A yard expects you to deliver the car. We work the other way round: we come to the driveway, alley or lot, tow it for free and pay you when it’s loaded. If you’re weighing the two, our explainer on junkyards versus removal services is honest about when a yard makes sense.

Getting around Blue Island

Blue Island is a city of 22,558 people (2020 Census) in ZIP code 60406, about 16 miles south of the Loop. Its northern edge is shared with Chicago’s Morgan Park neighborhood. Calumet Park is east, Riverdale southeast, Dixmoor and Posen south, Robbins west and Alsip northwest.

From our lot at 13720 S Lowe Ave the truck takes Halsted Street north, 127th Street west and then Western Avenue, about 4 road miles and nine minutes. Western Avenue is the spine of the city and part of the old Dixie Highway; inside Blue Island the route splits into Western Avenue and Gregory Street before rejoining at Burr Oak Avenue. Vincennes, Kedzie, Ashland and Marshfield Avenues are the other through streets. I-57 runs half a mile east of town and the Tri-State is 1.5 miles west.

Rail is the easiest way to give directions here. Blue Island has six Metra stations: 119th Street, 123rd Street, Prairie Street and Vermont Street on the Rock Island line, plus the Metra Electric terminus across from Vermont Street and the Burr Oak stop at 127th Street and Lincoln Avenue. “Two blocks from the Vermont Street station” gets a driver to you. So do the Cal-Sag Channel bridges, which are in the Historic American Engineering Record.

Housing and where cars end up

Blue Island’s housing is close to an even split: about 44 percent single-family detached houses and about 46 percent in buildings with two or more units, nearly a third of them in buildings of five or more, by the Census Bureau’s 2020-2024 estimates. Around 5 percent are mobile homes. So an apartment lot is as likely a pickup spot as a driveway, and many houses have a garage off an alley.

Alley pickups have a city rule to respect: anyone parked in an alley has to leave 12 feet clear, can’t block a driveway and can’t park within 30 feet of a T-alley intersection. If the car is wedged in, tell us when you call; it changes how the driver lines up the truck.

One more Blue Island rule shapes every visit. Section 72.08 keeps tow trucks, trailers and commercial trucks above class B off streets and property in residential zones, with limited exceptions. In practice our truck arrives, loads and leaves; it doesn’t wait parked on your block. Have the paperwork and keys (if any) ready.

Overnight parking and the city sticker

  • 2 to 6 a.m.: no parking on residential-district streets unless the vehicle has a valid city vehicle sticker or a permanent overnight permit. Visitors can register for temporary overnight parking up to 7 times a month. Fines run from $50 to $750 a day.
  • Near Western Avenue: within one block of Western (119th Street to Grove Street) and Olde Western (Canal Street to 135th Street), no parking from 2:30 to 5 a.m. on weekdays and 3:30 to 5 a.m. on weekends.
  • Street cleaning and snow: no parking while a street is being cleaned, and once snow passes 2 inches, designated snow routes are off limits until removal is done. Violators may be towed.
  • Sticker: every resident’s vehicle needs the annual city vehicle license. Junking the car is a good reason not to buy the next one.

Abandoned and inoperable cars

Blue Island counts a vehicle as abandoned if it’s on a right-of-way or lot in such disrepair it can’t be driven and looks abandoned, or if it hasn’t moved for 24 hours or more with no plates or valid registration. Before towing one, the city gives notice by certified mail or on the windshield, and removal comes no sooner than 7 days later; a hazardous dilapidated vehicle can go immediately. The nuisance chapter defines an inoperable vehicle as one that can’t be driven on public streets for 7 days for any reason, including missing registration.

Vehicles we take from Blue Island

Wrecked cars, scrap cars with missing parts, non-runners, pickups and vans. Free towing, payment at pickup by cash, Zelle or Cash App, and no title needed for the quote. If the title is missing, tell us what papers you have; Illinois rules decide which work for a scrap sale, and we’ll confirm on the call.

Blue Island removal questions

Do I have to bring my junk car to a yard in Blue Island?

No. We come to the car, tow it for free and pay you there. A yard visit only makes sense if you can drive or haul the car yourself, and most junk cars can't be driven.

My car has no city sticker and won't start. Can it stay on the street overnight?

Not in a residential district. Blue Island bans street parking there from 2 to 6 a.m. unless the vehicle has a valid city sticker or a permit. Near Western Avenue the hours differ slightly.

How much warning does Blue Island give before towing an abandoned car?

The city sends notice by certified mail or puts it on the windshield, and removal comes no sooner than 7 days later. A hazardous dilapidated vehicle can be removed right away.
