Two Riverdales, one boundary
Chicago’s Riverdale community area and the village of Riverdale share a name and a border at 138th Street, and that confuses a lot of people looking for help with a car. This page is the Chicago side: Community Area 54, running from 115th Street south to the city limit at 138th, between the old Illinois Central tracks and the Bishop Ford Freeway. It’s served by parts of three ZIP codes, 60628, 60633 and 60827.
From our lot at 13720 S Lowe Ave the drive is about 3.2 road miles and eight minutes in light traffic. The truck takes 138th Street east, turns north on Indiana Avenue and comes in on 130th Street. That last part matters more here than almost anywhere we work.
Getting a truck to the car
Altgeld Gardens, the Chicago Housing Authority development built in 1944 and 1945, is mostly two-story row houses spread across about 190 acres between 130th and 134th Streets, Doty Avenue and St. Lawrence Avenue. Only two roads link it to the rest of the city’s streets: Indiana Avenue and 130th Street. Everything else is cut off by rail lines, the river and the forest preserve.
For a pickup that means:
- Tell us whether the car is nearer the Indiana Avenue side or the 130th Street side.
- Give the building or the short street it’s on, plus the nearest numbered street.
- If it’s in a shared lot behind the row houses, say whether a truck can pull in front of it or whether it has to be rolled out first.
The other neighborhoods in the community area have their own layouts. Eden Green, the 1968 townhouse and apartment development, sits between the Canadian National tracks and the Union Pacific tracks south of 130th. Golden Gate, named for the Chicago Park District park on Eberhart Avenue, runs from the Union Pacific tracks east toward Langley Avenue. The small Riverdale neighborhood lies south of the Calumet River between Indiana Avenue and the Union Pacific tracks, around the former St. Mary of the Assumption church. In all of them, a cross street and a landmark such as Carver Military Academy at 131st and Doty or Golden Gate Park saves a phone call from the driver.
Red Line work near 130th
Construction on the CTA’s Red Line Extension began on April 24, 2026. The four-year project extends the line 5.6 miles south from 95th/Dan Ryan to a new terminal at 130th Street, inside this community area. Until it’s done, expect work zones and changing lanes near the 130th Street approach. We plan around it, but if your car is right by the work area, mention it.
City rules that apply here
Because this is Chicago, the city’s rules apply, not the village’s. The Department of Streets and Sanitation classifies a vehicle as abandoned if it meets any of these:
- it’s on a public way in such disrepair that it can’t be driven,
- it hasn’t been moved or used for more than seven consecutive days and is apparently deserted,
- it’s been left on the public way without state registration for two or more days,
- it’s a hazardous dilapidated vehicle in full view of the public, on public or private property.
Abandoned vehicles are reported through 311 and towed to a city pound, and if the owner doesn’t redeem them they’re sold for scrap. A car that’s headed that way is worth more to you sold than impounded.
Chicago also runs a winter overnight parking ban, 3 a.m. to 7 a.m. from December 1 to April 1, on designated arterial streets, plus a separate 2-inch snow ban on other main streets. Check the city’s winter parking page for the signed routes before leaving a dead car on a main street in winter.
Papers and payment on the day
You’ll be paid at the car, by cash, Zelle or Cash App, once the driver has checked it matches your description and you’ve signed the paperwork. If the title is missing, list the papers you have; Illinois rules decide which papers work for a scrap sale, and we’ll confirm on the call. Our page on cars with no title explains how that conversation goes, and our walk-through of pickup day covers the visit itself. Cars that don’t start at all are the normal case here, not the exception.
Around Altgeld Gardens
South across 138th Street is the village of Riverdale, where our lot is. Dolton is southeast across the river, and South Deering is north and east past Lake Calumet. The full list is on the towns page.
